How Wide Should Curtains Be?
Find a practical curtain width using fullness ratios for standard, full, sheer, and decorative curtain styles.
Curtains should usually be wider than the window, not the same width as the opening. Extra fabric creates folds, covers the glass more evenly, and keeps the panels from looking stretched when closed.
Common Width Ratios
- Light coverage: about 1.5 times the window width.
- Standard coverage: about 2 times the window width.
- Fuller decorative panels: about 2.5 to 3 times the window width.
